A look at our tour guides- seniors from the 274th class. The student body today is about 52% female and 48% male. The six young women who challenged the all-male composition of Central in the early 1980s, and who ultimately gained entrance into the 245th class in 1983, opened the door for the admission of young women to CHS. Although there were many of the CHS men (and staff as well), and especially the alumni who were against the move- a decision upheld by the Pennsylvania State Supreme Court, the action, in fact,  saved Central from becoming another neighborhood school with a then total enrollment of 1100 students as compared to a co-ed population which is twice as large today. The wealth of Science, Math, Foreign Language courses coupled with the many Advanced and AP- level courses has allowed 98% percent of the 2015 graduating class to enter four-year colleges. The contemporary CHS student has a depth of knowledge and a breadth of skills in technology that provide an array of invaluable skills for an easy transition into the university of their choosing. Last year more than twenty million dollars in scholarships was awarded to the graduating Seniors. Let others sing of college days, their alma maters true...
