Hello all of you 214ers! How about letting us
know what you are up to...retirement,
grandchildren, travels, still working? Also, your
feedback about the 214 Website would be
appreciated. It's now seven months since our 45th
Reunion, and this website is the place to visit if
you want to keep the memories alive. We want to
hear from you. Just write a message on the Forum.

Retirement
Just a note to let everyone know of our where
abouts. We are moving to an active adult
community by Toll Brothers in Oaks Pa.This will
place us about five minutes from my mother-in-
law, and also the same distance from my
grandson. We spend a good part of the winter in
Boynton Beach Fl. also in a similar community. I
retired from dentistry after thirty six years in
practice, in 2002. I have taken up golf since
then and I play at the game. This is our first
summer in twenty years not being at the Margate
Beach.But since we have been busy moving into
our new home I haven't missed it yet. Hope to
hear from fomer classmates

Returning to the east coast in 2007
Last month marks my 30th year as a commodity
trader (I'm having too much fun to EVER retire).
I've been living on the west coast but find it
increasingly difficult to be wide-eyed and bushy-
tailed at 6:30 am, so by splitting my time
between New Hampshire and Florida(winter) I'll
get to sleep in a bit. I'm looking forward with
great enthusiasm to the 50th reunion. No matter
where in the world I am in 2010, I'll be there.

in the shenandoah valley of virginia
where i've been for 33 years, as an apprentice
redneck. my day job is still as a psychology
dept head. in my copious spare time i'm still a
sworn law enforcement officer and work on police
futures (yeh, i know, seems oxymoronic). like
woody, i find retirement hard to contemplate.
i'm doing a combination of what i like and i
what i damned well please. that'd be hard to
give up.
thoroughly enjoyed the 45th and looking forward
to the 50th.

In 1997 retired as a FBI Special Agent.Went
immediately to work as the spokesperson for the
Palm Beach County Florida Sheriff's
Office.Previously in the FBI had been
spokesperson in Philadelphia and from 1985 till
1997 spokesperson for the Miami Division.Still a
member of the Pa. Bar and while in the FBI was
in house counsel and legal instructor.Will be
retired and living in Highland Beach Florida
across from the ocean by our 50th.Married for 40
years to the former Carol Weinstein.Just became
grandparents 7 months ago.Life is beautiful.

What happened to summer?
Hello Everyone- What happened to summer? I just
turned 64 on September 3rd, and as a kid always
knew that my birthday signalled a return to
school. I'll still be back in the classroom
substituting once again. I'm looking forward to
the High Holidays, Fall, pumpkin pie, and hearing
from you on the 214er Forum. Let's hear from you
fellows...how are you doing? what's new with you
and yours? CHS is again up and running with the
admission of the 269th class. Check in with their

Hi 214 from Art Smukler
Hi Everyone; What a great website. I'm still sorry I wasn't able to
make the 45th reunion but am definitely planning on
attending the 50th. I'm still practicing psychiatry in Los Angeles
and hopefully can continue for many years. This December I'll be
married for 39 years (unbelievable) and we have two grown
kids(both married) and three grandchildren. I'm not sure who
lives out here on the west coast. If anyone is interested in

Best Wishes for a Happy Holiday
Hello - It's December 3rd, and only three weeks
until Christmas; less time until Chanukah. Happy
Kwanzaa to those so celebrating, and with the New
Year around the corner, I would take this
opportunity to wish each and every one of you a
Happy and Healthy New Year filled with only good
times and happy occurrences. Make a New Year's
resolution to let your classmates know what
you're doing. Use the 214er Forum. Send a photo

Reunion Date
I have been trying for 45 years to get to a
reunion. For 45 years my pleas have gone
unheeded. Can't we have a reunion that takes
place on a Sunday so that those of us who are
Jewish can comfortably accomodate our religious
preferences to avoid travel and any activity on
the Sabbath? If a Central High classmate of mine
asked us to vote for a day other than a
religious day of observance on the calendar,
wouldn't we all respond? I am really upset that
never has this plea been taken to heart by those
planning the reunions. Have a heart guys - life
is short and friends of mine are now being
listed on the memorial board. Life is catching
up with all of us and I hope to see you all at a
reunion that is truly a reflection of the great
pluralistic nature of Class 214 of the greatest

Here in Skokie(outside Chicago) for the past30+
years. MArried to Ruth for 37 with 2 kids and 2
grandkids. Have been a surgeon for that time and
also travel the country working for the
Commission on Cancer Was unable to make the
45th but will make the 50th - hard to believe.
Life has been good and would look forward
to "retiring" , or rather changing activities.
Had the opportunity to show my kids the old sod
and the south lawn. Hope to visit this site
regularly. Enjoyed seeing the material and albums
posted. Thanks for keeping it going

It's Almost Summer...again here at the Jersey shore (a rewrite)
How are all you 214 class members? I hope that
you are enjoying retirement or are looking
forward to it soon. I'm still working in the
school system where I served for more than thirty-
two years as a teacher, supervisor and
administrator. Now I am a substitute teacher, and
I am really having a great time. No meetings, no
headaches, no long-term responsibilities. The
Jersey shore (Monmouth County) where my wife Pam
and I live is shaping up for the Summer 2007
crowd. The boardwalk restaurants are up and
running. We walk every week-end on the Bradley
Beach and Avon-By-The-Sea boardwalks. Look for
us; I'm the one wearing the red Central baseball
cap. A few weeks ago, my wife and I had lunch
with Allen Schwartz and his fiancee Anna at Jack
Baker's Wharfside Restaurant at Point Pleasant
Beach. A great time had by all! Let's hear from

Preston Kraft
Hello,
My dad was Preston Kraft. He graduated with all
of you. He passed away when I was 6 months old,
so I never got a chance to know him. I was
hoping to contact anyone that knew him well just
to tell me about him. I've heard all the good
things, but I would love to hear about him as a
person, stories, etc.

Internet, would one (or some) of you know how to track down our
missing clasmates via the web? That might go a long way toward
ensuring a monster turnout for the 50th.

Where have the years gone
The things you run into while surfing the net.
I've been gone for a long time, but I can't
believe its been almost fifty years. This has
been a pleasant surprise. I'm retired in Hampton,
VA and enjoying life.

Summer's over, so I'm back to work
Hello, my friends of the 214- Pam & I had a
great summer here at the Jersey Shore, but now
we're back to the classroom. She teaches a Pre-K
class in the Jewish Community Center of Deal,
NJ, and I am doing a stint of teaching back in
my old district of Holmdel, NJ (both in Monmouth
County). This year I'm filling in for a teacher
on maternity leave, teaching Spanish to children
in grades 1, 2 and 3. I've been receiving e-mail
from many of you who have visited our website,
and I thank you for your comments and
suggestions. It's a bit more than two years
until our fiftieth reunion, and we are still
missing about fifty members of the '14. Thanks
to several of you, we have located a few.
However, we need your help. Check out
the 'Missing' page on the website, and if you or
someone else you know is listed, send an e-mail
to us at phlchs214@yahoo.com with the
particulars regarding the missing classmate.
We'll forward the information to Steve Green and

Hello Al,
My name is Bob Camardella. I was in class 217, my
brother Al was in 208. I was passing a lonely
weekend morning when I found your beautiful web
site. Thanks for the great memories, especially
the 1959 football champion team photo. I was a
proud member. My brother, who I loved dearly,
passed away a couple days before Christmas in
1999 and I know he also would appreciate your
efforts. Thanks again and keep up your great work.

The passing of Thomas Throne
I would regret to inform you that our classmate
Thomas Throne passed away after a brief illness
on February 11, 2009. Tom had recently retired
from Rohm and Haas Pharmaceutical Company where
he had been a pharmaceutical engineer for more
than thirty-five years. His son, Thomas, Jr.
(239th class) informed us of his passing. Check
out Tom's retirement photo and bio on
the '214ers of Note' website. Our condolensces
to the Throne family. Allen Hirsh February 24,

The passing of Thomas Throne
I would add that Tom had recently reached out to
the class through an e-mail after he came across
our 214th Class website. He very graciously
forwarded a detailed biographical sketch of his
family, children and the many activities that
the closely-knit Throne family did together,
along with a retirement dinner photo; the photo
that he is holding is from the 214 Yearbook . He
was proud to have been a pharmaceutical chemist
(not engineer as I reported above) and to have
grown professionally with the company. He was
looking forward to a busy, fun-filled retirement
with family members and friends. He will be
sorely missed by all of us.

Hi everyone,
Why I absent-mindedly entered "Central High 214"
into a Google search, I'm not sure, but, VOILA!
Here's this Web site!
This is the first I've tried to contact the old
Alma Mater. You bet I have every intention of
attending the 50th reunion!
After Central, I attended Temple University, then
Hahnemann Medical College. I did my medical
internship at Albert Einstein Medical Center, then
left Philadelphia for good and served 6 years in
the Navy where I did my residency in Psychiatry at
Oakland Naval Hospital.
I moved to Southern California where I was in
private practice until I moved to Maui, HI in
1991. I left private practice and joined the VA in
2000.
My wife and I moved from Maui in 2005 to the wild
west cowboy town of Prescott, Az. Then in 2007 to
Lecanto, FL in where I am the Chief of Psychiatry
for the Community Based Outpatient Clinics of the
North Florida/South Georgia VA Health System.
I've been through the standard life changes - one
divorce, two marriages (the first 20 years, this
one 25, I think it will last), heart attack & 4
vessel bypass graft, knee surgery for torn medial
meniscus, confusion on seeing snapshots of me and
wondering who that old guy is in the picture.
I have 4 sons, all with professional careers,
living in Florida, Iowa, Utah, California (doesn't
anybody stay in one place anymore?).
I can't wait to see all you old (and I mean OLD)
farts at the 50th!

a District Commissioner-- an association with the
BSA that I've had for more more than fifty years

and I breakfast and walk on the boardwalk in Avon-
By-The-Sea and Bradley Beach almost every weekend
during the summer months. Look for us! I'm the
one wearing the red CHS 214 baseball cap. I hear
from so many of you upon finding our website and
then leaving your thoughts. As the Fiftieth
Reunion gets closer, more of you will make
contact. Pass the word on to those you see who
are listed as 'Missing'. Let's hear from them as
well. Our goal is to have as many of you as
possible attend the Fiftieth Reunion. If this is

Summer of 2009
Just received notice of our 50th. My, how time
flies. I've lived in Boynton Beach, Fl for 9
years enjoying retirement. I spend hurricane
season, August and September, in Philadelphia.
This year I will stay in Philly until after the
birth of my first grandchild in November. Still
love the Phiilies and the Eagles!!!

The Passing of Joseph Poulshock
Saddly I would inform you of the passing of Joe
Poulshock on July 7th, 2009. I had been e-mailing
Joe recently and included him in the 'Notables of
the 214' photo gallery and established a link to
his website where you can see his glorious photos
of Philly and his exciting artwork. His website
PhillyJoe.com gives you a sense of this gifted
individual and our friend. He will be sorely
missed.Our condolenses to his family.

The passing of Jules Shapiro
We received the sad news of the passing of Jules
Shapiro from his son, Avi: "My Father, Jules
Shapiro, passed away on October 4th, 2008. He had
very fond memories of Central High, specifically
of playing Basketball and Baseball for the
school. I am sorry that he will be missing this
event.

The Passing of Philip Lank
Phil Lank passed away on May 7th, 2008.
He was a graduate of the US Naval Academy in 1964
and lived in South Carolina at the time of his
death.

listed incorrectly above. Please note that his

50 th reunion
well starting to find guy's thru facebook .
started with lou stern and has grown.went back
for the 25 th and all the klein's sat
together.sold my company in 1990 and left in 95
to be county treas. after several terms as city
councilman.moved to our lake house full time
about 8 years ago.stayed involved with
scouting,rotary,masonic orders. two daughters
with 5 grandchildren all with special talents
that make me so proud.don't get back to philly
since my parents passing have a brother in mt
joy and a sister near lancaster.spend much of my
time on my stamp collection travel to judge at
stamp shows from chicago to wash DC and
international to canada. spend about 30 weekends
a year a great retirement plan.if you remember i
worked at penn fruit after grad school at their
expense i stayed in the food biz. my company was
a food brokerage and represented over a 100 major
company's and had 91 employees timing is
everything when you plan on selling.drop me a
line i live halfway between cleveland and
columbus.

Central grad conduct the orchestra which played
the School song and the Fight song. Incredibly
funny evening-even had Dick Gregory!

A blast from the past
Hello to any and all of my former classmates. I
recently found the website our 214 website and
wanted to get in touch again.
After attending Temple University from
undergraduate through PhD, I began my career as
a writer. I spent over twenty years managing
Communications functions for The Home Insurance
Company and Citibank in New York (too bad they
don't give frequent flyer miles for train
journeys) then opted to work more locally in
Communications for the Pharma industry for
another 10 years or so, until I retired.
My wife Nancee and I have been married for 42
years, and our sons and their wives have given
us the joy of providing six grandchildren. We
live in Princeton, New Jersey now, and I'm
keeping busy by auditing courses at the
University, going to concerts and seeing movies.
All in all, it's lots of fun, and certainly
beats commuting four hours a day.
I'd love to hear from any of my old friends--and
I'm looking forward to the 50th Reunion.

Feb 2010
After two marriages of many years, five children,
four careers, and a life where l wake up feeling
blessed every morning, currently back in
Philadelphia for a while. Will be at 50th gladly.
Travel 8 months of year and will do so until I no
longer can.

Spring in Potter County, Pa.
Spring is finally happening here in Northern Pa.
Our country home is located in a beautiful
valley. The west branch of the Genesee River
flows through our back yard. The beavers built a
dam last fall, so there is a good habitat for
ducks and geese.
Retired from teaching electrical engineering
technology at Alfred State College a few years
ago. Had a great time.
Spoke with Frank Stratton a few nights ago. He
is doing great.

the 50th Back with Family
I read with interest,joy and pleasure the above
comments. Oct. can t come soon enuf.I am now
retired in Florida(still have family in Philly)
enjoying life with wife#2 (of thirty years) We
travel,play golf,sometimes together,enjoy an
occasional cruise and spend some time on
charitable endeavors. I feel blessed in many
ways including having been part of the 214 and
CHS. I hope to see all my friends at the 50th.

Coming from Israel to the Reunion
I am finally going to make a reunion. Really
looking forward to trying to see if my memory
still works with recognizing old friends that I
haven't seen in 50 years. I am staying for the
weekend and pray that someone will recognize me.
Central High was a very important part of mine
and yours in our lives. In fact I was asked to
officiate at a funeral of someone from Central
well before our time together in the 214 - I was
told by the family that "he loved Central as
much as he loved life!" I thought what could I
say as the eulogy. So I sang "Dear High" - and
all his friends sang it with me - In fact the
song goes well with the 23rd Psalm - but, this
is not the time for eulogies, unless "fine
words" about life and friendships are the order
of the day. Looking forward to seeing you all --

PC in our "Central High" Song
Hi Guys,
Did anyone notice that our "Central High" song
has been tampered with. After 69 years, I still
know the first stanza of "Central High" COLD!
Much to my surprise instead of "For thee thy
sons will labor.. I find " For thee we all will
labor... OH! I forgot CHS is coed. However, it
will always be (as long as I have breath)"thy
sons will labor"... Looking forward to seeing
all of you soon.

Ride to Reunion
Is there anyone that is going to the reunion
that live close to Plymouth Meeting that I could
ride with Friday and Saturday evening. My night
vision is a problem and my wife just broke her
right foot and can't drive. I aimed for the
left foot and missed. We attended her
Germantown High School 50th reunion last Sunday
and don't understand why everyone looked so old
except us; although only my wife was the only
one walking with a cane. The 214 hedge fund
investor still has not materialized.

Great! Great! Great! A Thousand Times Great!
It was wonderful...our Fiftieth Reunion. Those
of us who attended, and the number was in excess
of 110 had the time of our lives. The memories
will stay with us long after the words stop
describing the events, the people and the
friendships that were rekindled. Check out the

70 years and counting
Hello everyone- What a lousy Labor Day at the
Jersey Shore- drizzling, chilly, but the beaches
are crowded. September 3rd happens to be my
birthday-my 70th birthday. I sure don't feel
seventy...well most of the time. It's been a
good summer on the whole, and I must say that I
have enjoyed each and every day, walking on the
boardwalk with my wife, Pam, catching up on the
must-do list, updating our class website,
working on my train layout. Don't forget to send
in any photos, bio info, or any details of your
life you would like me to post on the website. I
look forward to hearing from you. See you on the

70 is the new 39
Remember how Jack Benny was an eternal 39, don't you feel
that way also. Yes, we all turned 70, but what the hell. We are
CHS graduates, a cut above the norm. The majority of you are
professionals and what I gather from your bio's, still working.
For the most part we are married over 40 years, have lots of
grandchildren and screw the sequester. So when we're 75, I
mean 39 we will get together for our 55 reunion. If you're
bummed out about the weather in Philly, come and live the
good life in South Florida. Life is good, really good.

The Bright Ones
On March 16th, while snowflakes fell in Philly, my wife and I
had a special dinner on the patio of Boca Raton Hotel Resort
outside overlooking the golf course in balmy eighty degree
weather. What was so special you ask; well Marv Weinstein
decided to invite the brightest 214 classmates he knew.
Included in this elite group besides me and Marv, were Barry
Bickman, Larry Harad, Mickey Kaplan, Alan Marcus, Paul
Miller, Gerry PACKMAN, Neil Schlackman, and Neil Scholnick.
Why were they considered so brilliant you ask again; well
that's an easy one, they spend the winter in South Floida while
you freeze your peckers off in the North. Using that theory, I
must the smartest of everyone because I live here year round.
A great time was had by everyone and their wives. We're all
looking forward to the 55th reunion and thought should be
given to holding the 60th down here.

55th Reunion 2015
Happy New year 2015- belatedly to all my
classmates. Those of you having their mini-Reunion
in Boca.....have a great time. It's winter at the
Jersey Shore, and the weather has been- well,
winter-like. Our 55th reunion will be held on
Friday night, October 9th at the Sheraton Society
Hill in the Olde City, Dock Street, in Philly.
Mark your calendars now! The event will feature
lunch and a tour of CHS beginning at noon,
followed by an evening of schmoozing with your old
classmates. A wine- and-cheese party will be held
simultaneously for our spouses or significant

The 55th Reunion
Fabulous time for one and all. We're getting
better with age, and so is our Alma Mater. Good
friends, good talks, plenty of reminiscing-all
made for a wonderful day and evening. Thank you to
Art Brandolph, the Reunion Committee, and our
venerable Class President, Steve Green. I am
already thinking about the 60th. My wife Pam and I
thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. She was impressed
with CHS; it was her first time at the school. But
most of all she saw in all of us was what makes
the class so special...our boundless affection for
Central, and the bonds that still unit us after so
many years. Let others sing of college days..See

Winter at the Jersey Shore
The 214 Mini Reunion at Boca Raton is scheduled
for the end of February, and a great turn-out
is expected as noted from the many e-mails I
have been copied. Here at the Jersey Shore we
are having the usual cold weather(twenty-three
degrees this morning) with periods of snow.
Last week's storm was the first real snow event
of the winter. Looking forward to Spring. Maybe
next year we'll join those celebrating the Mini
Reunion in Florida-55+ years since Central
days. I hope to hear from you all. Let me know

Another year and summer 2016 is almost here
It's Almost Summer 2016.. How are all of you? I
hope that you are continuing to enjoy good
health, and are taking advantage of these
golden leisure-filled days. I was chagrined to
learn of the passing of Lou Natkin and now Jay
Schwartz. Keep their memories alive. On a
personal note, it's been fourteen years since I
fist retired from education, but I'm still
working in the school system where I served for
more than thirty years as a school
administrator...still working as a substitute
teacher, and continuing to have a great time,
although most of those with whom I worked are
now also retired. I have some neckties older
than some of the teachers, but the (the
teachers) are all great! Each one eager to
teach our leaders of tomorrow, and all very
tech-savvy. For the last seven years, I've
also been a volunteer with the Boy Scouts of
America, this time serving as an Assistant
District Commissioner-- an association with the
BSA that I've had for almost sixty years since
my first summer at Treasure Island camp back in
1954. The Jersey shore where we live is shaping
up for the Summer, 2016 crowd. Beautiful
weather lately, and the locals are ready for
the influx of the shoobies and bennies---is
that outdated? My wife Pam and I often
breakfast and walk on the boardwalk in Asbury
Park, Avon- By-The-Sea and Bradley Beach
especially during the summer months. Look for
us! I'm the one still wearing the now faded red
CHS 214 baseball cap and the official 55th
Reunion T-shirt. I still hear from so many of
you upon discovering OUR website (NOW IN ITS
ELEVENTH YEAR) and then leaving your thoughts
in the Chat Forum. If this is the first time
you've reached the 214 Website, I urge you to
write a comment.. or send me a bio or photo of
yourself and yours...and I'll scan it into our
Photo Gallery. I urge you to revisit the
Website often, and e-mail your fellow

Just spent a fabulous weekend in Philly attending my really
grandson's Bar Mitzvah. Center city was hopping and never
looked more beautiful. After all these years I just learned that
City Line Ave is really named City Ave.

CHS ...a victim of Russian fake facebook intrusion
Allen Schwartz sent me an e-mail recently in
which he linked to an article in which a
Russian agent created a fake facebook account
in which he posed as an alumnus from Dear Ol'

If youre an American high school grad of a
certain age, you probably have a friend or two
on Facebook like Melvin Redick. Redick promotes
himself as a proud graduate of Philadelphias
elite Central High School and a Philly native,
a salt-of-the-earth guy who hung around
Pennsylvania to attend Indiana University and
take up residence in Harrisburg. Most of his
pictures on the social-media site are adorable
shots of him frolicking with his grade-school-
age daughter.
But Melvin Redick doesnt have anything to say
about his personal life, or his alma mater on
Olney Avenue. When he showed up on Facebook
late last spring, it was all about his rancor
toward Hillary Clinton and his rants about U.S.
policy toward Russia.
These guys show hidden truth about Hillary
Clinton, George Soros, and other leaders of the
US, Redick wrote on Facebook on June 8, 2016,
promoting the very first site hosting documents
that were illegally hacked from Democratic
Party higher-ups during last years campaign.
Visit #DCLeaks website. Its really
interesting!
Heres something else really interesting: Your
all-American high school chum Melvin Redick
seems not to actually exist, according to a
groundbreaking investigative piece published
late last week by the New York Times. Theres
no record, according to the Paper of Record,
that Redick ever attended Central or IUP, and
those happy pictures with his daughter appear
to have been taken in Brazil. The apparently
not-real Redick showed up on social media, the
newspaper found, around the same time as
Katharine Fulton and Alice Donovan all of
whom trashed Clinton, praised the campaign of
now-President Trump and steered American
Facebook users to hacked emails and documents,
all in a brand of mangled English that sounds a
little like the old cartoon character Boris
Badenov. And none of whom seems to be a real
human being living in the United States.
It feels like a pilot for a less-interesting
sequel on FX The Fake Americans. But the role
that the not-Philadelphian not-Melvin and his
pals played in the 2016 elections (and may
still be carrying out in American politics even
now) isnt so much entertaining as alarming. In
recent weeks, a raft of new disclosures each
more stunning than the last has made it clear
that a Russia-financed-and-run operation to
tilt the 2016 presidential election to Trump
had many more tentacles than we hapless real
Americans had first realized. And its
increasingly clear that born-in-the-USA social
media sites like Twitter and, especially,
Facebook were at the core of the scheme.
What have we learned?
Facebook, after months of insisting it had no
awareness of any Russia-directed schemes to use
Facebook to either disseminate fake news
about Clinton and Trump or promote the
illegally hacked campaign documents, recently
admitted in a fairly incomprehensible statement
to its two billion users and congressional
investigators that a Kremlin-linked firm
purchased at least $100,000 in ads that could
have been seen by as many as 70 million
Americans, promoting issues meant to boost
Trump and hurt Clinton.
The Times exposé delved deeper into the shadowy
world of fake Russian trolls on Facebook and
Twitter who appeared last summer to promote
sites like DCLeaks, which investigators now
believe was created in June 2016 by the Russian
military intelligence agency GRU. Facebook has
now acknowledged that its deleted at least 470
fictional accounts that appear in most cases to
hail from Mother Russia; the Times reported
that Facebook officials fingered a St.
Petersburg company with Kremlin ties called the
Internet Research Agency.
Just Tuesday morning, the Daily Beast website
added a twist by reporting that Russian
operatives with fake identities even tried
promoting a Facebook event on U.S. soil, a
planned rally against allegedly pro-Muslim-
refugee immigration policies in Twin Falls,
Idaho, that dovetailed with negative reporting
by then-Steve-Bannon-run Breitbart and other
far-right U.S. news sites.
It sounds bad, but dont just listen to me.
Listen to Vyacheslav Nikonov, a member of
Russias parliament, who told Russian
television over the weekend that U.S.
intelligence missed it when Russian
intelligence stole the president of the United
States. Im sure that Nikonov heard later from
Vladimir Putin or Putins henchmen that youre
not supposed to say that kind of thing out
loud.
Now, I realize what some readers are saying at
this point. Some will surely ask whether any of
this matters. Sure, its a political dirty
trick,
but isnt being a political dirty
trickster the worlds second-oldest profession?
And arent some of these Russian efforts to aid
Trump more pathetic even comical than
effective? After all, theres no evidence that
a single person showed up to the anti-Muslim
rally in Twin Falls, and who takes seriously
postings that call Hillary Clinton the
president of the Democratic Party, for
example?
But, no, this matters. A lot.
For one thing, the Russian effort to run a
negative campaign against Clinton and promote
Trump is a prima facie campaign contribution
and, thus, a flagrant violation of U.S.
election law that explicitly bars foreign
donations. The $100,000 ad purchase was
surpassed by an in-kind contribution of troll
labor worth hundreds of thousands of dollars
more so were starting out with the biggest
foreign-campaign-influence case in years.
And once we acknowledge that, the next question
and the one that is obviously of great
interest to special prosecutor Robert Mueller
is what did the presidents campaign know, and
when did it know it? How did the Russians know
which messages to promote and, more important,
which voters to target in which American states
(like the Pennsylvania of Melvin Redick)
without help from Trump insiders? What was the
role of the data operation run by Trumps son-
in-law, Jared Kushner, and the shadowy data
firm called Cambridge Analytica, founded by
pro-Trump hedge-fund billionaire Robert Mercer,
which worked for Trump, the totally unexpected
passage of Brexit, and the deeply tainted
incumbent in Kenyas discredited recent
election?
Lets also acknowledge this: While its hard to
quantify, fake news and hacked documents
clearly mattered in an election that was
essentially decided by 70,000 voters in three
key states. How many young or nonwhite voters,
bombarded with negativity including Facebook
ads that were paid for by Russia, were
discouraged enough by the parade of dim
headlines that they stayed home last Nov. 8?
These questions havent been answered even as
the evidence of coordinated and widespread
Russian meddling gets worse and worse.
And while the onus for this scandal falls on
Russia and anyone with Team Trump who might
have coordinated with a rival foreign power,
lets not give Facebook a free pass. The
reality is that billionaire Mark Zuckerbergs
joint has a lot to answer for. The social
network started with abject dishonesty
insisting as recently as June that the Silicon
Valley firm had not found any evidence of
Russian operatives buying election-related ads
on its platform and now has switched over to
half-confessional gobbledygook.
Its long past time for Facebook to give a full
and completely transparent accounting to
Congress, to Mueller and other investigators,
and most importantly to the American people
of anything and everything the company knows
about how Russia tried to use social media to
manipulate our election. After that, Facebook
and other internet giants need to take more
seriously the significant role not just a
harmless blip, as once claimed that fake
news and other dishonest uses of social media
are playing in modern politics in the United
States and around the world and begin to
refocus on how technology can instead be a
force for good in a fast-disintegrating world.
That doesnt seem to be Zuckerbergs No. 1
priority right now. Instead, in the only
commentary on todays empty celebrity politics
thats nearly as absurd as President Donald
Trump, Zuckerberg has been hanging around
early primary states like Iowa, getting to know
us lowly commoners in what many see as the
opening moves of a bizarro 2020 White House
bid. Its fairly obvious that Zuckerberg can
forget about becoming our 46th (or 47th)
president; he needs to stop playing around on
the campaign trail, return to Silicon Valley,
and get his own house in order.
My fellow classmates- is there nothing
sacred?? We have arrived at a time so different
from our youthful days at CHS. See you on the

Eagles
Congrats to my classmates on the Eagles Super Bowl victory. I
fondly remember 1960 when Chuck Bednarik played both
offense and defense and the Eagles won the NFL
Championship.

Watch the Super Bowl parade from my couch in toasty
Miamuh today. I have to say I was greatly impressed by the
size of the turnout, the behavior of the fans and players, but
mostly the beauty of the city. Im proud to say I was born and
raised in Philly.

A Post Mortem on the Super Bowl
Bob Maycon had waited patiently since the drubbing
the Packers took in the 1960 NFL Championship at
the hands of the Eagles. He was an Eagles fanatic,
but the wait of fifty-eight years was too long,
even for Bob. So when he saw the team as contenders
in Super Bowl LIII, he and his son Howard got their
tickets, made their flight an hotel reservations,
and off to cold and dreary Minneapolis. Of course,
you know that Philadelphia was victorious over the
Patriots by a score of 33-17. Shortly after
returning home, Bob came down with an illness,and
within ten days he passed away. At least Bob Maycon
got to see his beloved Eagles fly once again...even
though it took more than a half century of
patiently waiting for the next victory. We will
miss Bob, but we will surely think of him when the
Eagles win the next championship. Hopefully the
wait will not be as long this time.

2020 already?
Not too early to think about our 60th (!). The
Committee will soon be formed and meeting.For
the 55th, we planned only a Friday night event
(as well as lunch at The School that afternoon).
Our previous reunions were 2-day affairs. My
feeling is that whatever gives us the greatest
opportunity to spend quality time with each
other and catch up will be the best way to
reune. All ideas and suggestions are welcomed.
Each one of our gatherings becomes more
important as time passes.... Two tidbits: barry

Spring is around the corner...and other good tidings
What an 'unlike winter' we have had this past
season at the Jersey Shore. Almost no snow at
all except a trace here and there, a few days
of cold weather, a lot of rain...that was all,
and Spring will be here next week. I hope that
this year brings with it good health, good
friends, and adventures to keep the spirit
alive. I am doing OK with no major health
issues. My bride of almost 52 years and I have
been walking on the boardwalk in Bradley Beach
and Avon, as well as checking out the new
Asbury Park hi-rise condominiums and such. I am
still subbing at Holmdel High School a few days
a week-for the challenge. I just met with a
group of seniors in AP US History- the class of
2019. Before that, it was juniors, the class of
2020. Incidentally, October 2020 will feature
the event of a lifetime for the 214...our
sixtieth reunion. The Committee is starting to
think about venues and the like, and any input
you would like to contribute would be greatly
appreciated. Why not drop a line to Steve Green

North Lawn is being converted to a $42,000,000
Fine Arts Center- thanks to the generosity of
some of our bretheren and matching funds from
other contributors. The facility is twenty-
